A-level results still relevant in the recruitment process
This year’s cohort of A-level students, preparing to embark on the next stage in their career journey, need not fear their efforts have gone to waste, according to recruitment expert Wayne Brophy.
Despite a slight dip in top grades, from 26% last year to 25.9% gaining A* and A grades, record numbers have been accepted on university courses.
Commenting on the relevance of academic qualifications, Wayne Brophy, Managing Director of Cast UK, which specialises in recruitment for procurement, buying, supply chain and logistics, said:
“We heard recently that global accountancy firm, EY will no longer consider degree or A-level results when assessing potential employees, in a bid to widen access to the profession and open up opportunities for people regardless of their background.
“Though there is a strong case to support this, feedback from employers suggests this view is not true of all sectors and consideration of academic qualifications when recruiting for graduate roles is still high on the agenda.
“It’s important to ensure a level playing field when considering opportunities for graduates, but a high percentage of employers we speak to, particularly in sectors like logistics, manufacturing and engineering, feel academic qualifications have a valid place in the selection process. They are often reviewed in conjunction with other factors such as industry accreditations, voluntary work and demonstration of initiative, in order to build a strong picture of a candidate’s suitability for a post.
“As a specialist recruiter, we recognise that A-levels and degree results don’t always give employers the full story in terms of a candidate’s potential, but they are still an established benchmark for academic achievement. The record number of students taking places at universities this year suggests that these qualifications are still worthy of inclusion on a CV.”
